— “Two Sleepy People”, Hoagy Carmichael & unknown female vocalist, lyrics by Frank Loesser

Man, I love Hoagy Carmichael. I mean, not only did he write excellent melodies (he only did a few lyrics, early in his career; most lyrics to his songs are by others), but he was an interesting onscreen presence in movies, and he had a hell of an interesting voice. You’re going to hear a lot of his voice this week, starting with this utterly charming love song that made its debut in a Bob Hope movie.

Can you imagine something this simple, sincere, and well-observed in an Adam Sandler movie? Or Seth Rogen? Me neither.
