The Architect, when I asked him what I should read to get current on contemporary architectural thinking, really only recommended one name, Rem Koolhaas, and two books, Content (2004), and S, M, L, XL (1997).

I thought I’d heard of Koolhaas before, and I was right: through the Blowhards. And it wasn’t good. Rem turns out to be a postmodernist poseur of the first order (which, considering he became a star architect before he actually, you know, designed anything, seems only apropos).

Now, the Architect is a (really) sharp guyHe is, albeit, an “environmentally friendly” architect, but thus far I’ve not encountered any aspect of that which has been actually offensive. I went to a presentation hosted at his office on Rammed Earth construction and, know what? It seems both cool and reasonable. and he didn’t hiss, shriek, or cackle dismissively when he learned I was an Ayn Rand fan, so I’m not sure what to make of his admiration of this anti-conceptual Euro. But I want, when I have the cash, to get the books and peruse them. Hence these links.

So, yeah, a totally self-serving blog post.
