Upbeat Cynicism

what do you mean i lost my mind?

No doubt about it — I’ve got to get a bigger plate!

As if my pay-the-bills work, my two or three novels-in-waiting, my various screenplay revisions, and forcing myself to learn passable Mandarin (including reading Chinese characters — I hate being illiterate!) weren’t enough.

The few days before my birthday I inadvertantly gave myself two unexpected birthday gifts. In my notebooki are two provisional business plans, written on two successive days, written when I had planned to be committing fiction. No numbers or market research yet, but they both appear to be in the promising-to-bulletproof range.

The first is a kickass reality TV series. More than that, it would be subversively educational, repurposeable from the Chinese TV market to any international market (with minor re-editing and Iron Chef-style dubbing), and the concept — which I’m looking into trademarking — could also be licensed with no harm to the value of the original production. Plus, producing the series will directly fuel a second, more traditional company, and… well, let’s just say that there’s a lot of upside here, and leave it at that.

The downside is funding, of course. Even with the limited expenses associated with reality TV, and with all-digital at-hom production, starting it up is going to run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars (US), and I don’t want to pitch it without having the company formed and some partnership options, or at least letters of intent, in place.

But that plan was only three pages.

The second plan can be almost totally bootstrapped, involves import/export, and will make use of some contacts I already have. The major investment here is time spent on research, consulting lawyers, and networking with the producers of the two products I have my eye on thus far, as well as potential distributors.

So, on top of everything else, I’ll be trying to make myself rich.

(Know how I sometimes think I’m bipolar? Welcome to one of my really scary “up” times!)

(And yes, I have been reading Robert Kiyosaki again recently!)

POSTSCRIPT — AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! Just got another one percolating through the old bean and, if the BS numbers I’ve run through the model are even a remote indication… it could startup for very little… be in the black inside of two to three months on ALL investments… and has virtually unlimited potential for growth. And it’s a service business!!! Now I’ve just got to put together a team, get some real numbers to run, and pitch investors successfully. There MUST be a flaw in it somewhere, I just haven’t found it yet.

  1. Now add a wife and four kids to that plate and see if you’ve got any room for dessert.
